French Empire Mantel Clock depicting Odysseus
Fine quality, large fire gilded French Empire bronze mantel clock depicting a seated Odysseus/Ulysses with spear and shield. Superbly executed modelling, casting and chasing with the shield decoration cleverly adapted as the face of the clock. Unsigned but good quality 8 day silk suspension movement. An identical clock is illustrated in Tardy’s 'La Pendule Francaise', which shows an example in the Victoria & Albert Museum Collection of French Clocks. Circa 1815.
