CA0307 Large Grand Tour souvenir of The Capitoline Wolf

A rare good quality, early 19th century Grand Tour patinated bronze of The Capitoline Wolf suckling the twin founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. Unusually this large example stands on a shaped bronze base as seen on the original in Rome. Some wear to patina. Presented on a stepped Sienna and patinated bronze marble block base.The Capitoline Wolf has been the symbol of Rome since ancient times and one of the most recognisable icons of ancient mythology. The sculpture has been housed since 1471 in the Palazzo del Conservatori on the Capitoline Hill. Italian, Rome, circa 1870.
