CA0339 Large decorative bronze of Antinous Osiris
Large, very decorative, 'Retour d'Egypte' style patinated bronze statue of Antinous Osiris after the antique original discovered at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli and now in the Vatican Museum in Rome. Antinous, who was the favourite of the Emperor Hadrian, died in the waters of the Nile in 130 A.D where the emperor founded the city of Antinopolis in his honour. Antinous was deified and his cult as Osiris-Antinous rapidly spread through all the provinces of the Empire, especially between 133 and 138 A.D. Impressive nicely patinated figure stands beside a palm tree stump raised on a Sienna type granite retangular block with canted angled corners. 20th century.
