CA0350 Fine English Sword Light Cavalry Officer's Sword Sabre by Osborn and Gunby

A very fine original 1796 Pattern blue and gilt blade Light Cavalry Officer's sword sabre by Osborn and Gunby. Possibly a presentation sword. The beautifully etched blade has classically inspired foliage and stand of arms designed in gold and silver, signed 'Osborn and Gunby' in a cartouche with 'Warranted'. Hilt with a finely carved ivory cross checked grip, foliate cast backstrap and pierced knucklbow. Classic simple gilt guard and quillon with a framed resting lion langet to both sides. Gilt mounted leather scabbard engraved with unusual intertwining circles with a floral border and fixed suspension rings.
Henry Osborn was a hugely important Birmingham based producer of swords and helped to design the 1796. Born in 1756 he began his apprenticeship in 1765 and completed it in 1784. First recorded as a sword cutler in 1785 by 1802 he opened a retail shop in London at 82 Pall Mall Street. In 1806 he went into partnership with John Gunby and the business operated until 1820. Appointed Sword Cutler and Accouterment Maker to His Majesty the King and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Henry Osborn died in 1827.
Super condition overall small tear to leather on scabbard. A very rare complete survivor.
