CA0344 Pair of Empire figural candlesticks attributed to Feuchère by Galle

A important and exceptionally provenanced pair of French Empire period fire gilt ormolu and patinated bronze candlesticks depicting the classical goddess Ceres and a young Dionysus after a design attributed to Pierre-François Feuchère by the leading french bronzier Claude Galle. Ceres representing Summer with her sheath of corn and sickle and Dionysus representing Autumn with his grapes, vine leaves and wine goblet. Vase shape candle cups with stylised leaf border and relief masks of Apollo with a sunburst and Medusa with a crescent moon headdress symbolising day and night. Fire gilt bronze ormolu column base with classical motifs of a bow, quiver and torch with a laurel wreath enclosing a pair of crossed arrows to reverse. Spreading stepped circular foot adorned with foliate borders. Internal GA stamps for Galle. France, Paris, circa 1805-10.

Provenance: The Gaia Servadio Collection. Leading light of the London art and social scene, the Italian writer and socialite counted amongst her friends Francis Bacon, Philip Roth, Salman Rushdie and Bernardo Burtolucci.
