CA0291 Large 17thC pair of prints from the Triumphs of Alexander by Le Brun
A superb important original pair of large highly detailed late 17th century etchings by Gérard Audran (1640-1703) from the original series of paintings depicting the Triumphs of Alexander the Great by Charles Le Brun (1619-1690) now in the Louvre, Paris. The Battle of Arbella engraved 'Ger. Audran Sculp 1674' and The Wounded King Porus carried before Alexander after the Battle of the Hydaspes River engraved 'Ger. Audran Sculp 1678'. Beautifully detailed prints created in three sections and joined as one. Very rare early examples, seldom seen at this scale, discoloration and staining as you would expect. Joins not perfect. This subjet was a popular series of prints through the Enlightenment of the 17/18th century and the neoclassicism of the 19th century. Later 19th century ebonised wood frame with gilt lining. France, circa 1680.
