Very Rare Pair of Grand Tour Classically inspired urns by Boschetti
Marvellously rare and beautiful pair of mid 19th century Grand Tour classically inspired bronze urns signed 'B.Boschetti Roma'. The urns covered in floral trailing ivy above a gadrooned bowl are obviously inspired by the famous silver drinking cup or kantharos from the House of Menander in Pompeii, set between rams head handles after the antique. Circular spreading socle stamped B.Boschetti Roma. Benedetto Boschetti was central to the growing demand for high quality works of art created by the growing interest in the Grand Tour in Rome during the 19th century. Little is known about his life, but he is known to have produced a large number of classically inspired objects ranging from bronzes to table tops and mosaics. Active between 1820-1870, Boschetti exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851. His workshop was renowned for the exceptional quality of its copies 'after the Antique', mainly in marble and bronze. Set upon typically Roman Tessalico Verde Antico and Belgium Black marble bases. Beautiful examples seldom seen and never as a pair. Italy, Rome, circa 1850.
