CA0414 Grand Tour Bronze of the Jennings Dog
Attractive good quality, mid 19th Century Grand Tour patinated bronze model of the 'Hound of Alcibiades' on a giallo antico marble block base. Purchased by Henry Constantine Jennings in Rome in 1750s it is generally referred to as the Hound of Alcibiades or simply the ‘Jennings Dog’. The Roman original in marble was itself a copy of a Hellenistic bronze statue of a large dog known as the ‘Molossian Hound’ and now resides in the British Museum. Another version can be seen in the Belvedere Court in the Vatican Museum in Rome. Italy, circa 1870.
