CA0419 Early Limestone Capital Fragment
Rare, Renaissance period 16th century, or earlier, fragment of a classical Composite capital carved, probably in limestone, with volute scrolls, central abacus and acanthus leaves. The Composite Order is one of the Great Architectual Orders that succeeded the Ionic, Doric and Corinthian Orders. It was used by the Romans from the 1st century onwards and was very popular during the Renaissance. Beautiful evocative piece. French or Italian but could possibly be Roman.
