CA0468 Grand Tour Procession of Dionysus Sarcophagus signed Nisini Roma

Fascinating and very rare late 19th century Grand Tour verdigris bronze model of a Roman sarcophagus after the original in the Museo Nazionale Romano. Decorated with a Dionysian procession as was popular on sarcophagus in Roman times depicting maenads, drunken gods and satyrs dancing and playing musical instruments. Discovered in 1885 during the excavation of a double chambered tomb for the Roman 'Pison' family it belongs to a type of Roman sarcophagi designed to be placed against a tomb wall with reliefs on three sides. A copy of the Sacophagus can also be seen in the Castle Museum in Lancut in Poland. Pesented on classical paw feet. Good large size, beautiful patina, signed 'G. Nisini Roma' to the rear. Presented on a substantial Levanto marble block base. Rome, circa 1890.
