CA0573 Scale Model of a 19th century naval carronade
Good quality cast iron table model of an early 19th century British Naval 24-pounder carronade from around 1808 mounted onto on an oak sea carriage. A carronade, was a cross between a howitzer and a canon. Its shorter barrel meant it could be loaded faster and it used an elevation screw instead of wedges. It was perfect for close fighting with the damage it caused earning it the nickname the Smasher. Made by the Carron Works in Falkirk it was first used in the late 18th century. Its innovative design proved a great success in the Napoleonic Wars. It was lighter, with 3 carronades the equivalent of a standard ship's cannon. This allowed you to carry more guns. HMS Victory's first shot at Trafalgar was fired from a carronade. Probably mid 20th century.
