Pair of Bronze Lions after Antonio Canova

A pair of late 19th century Grand Tour, probably Italian, patinated bronze resting lions after Antonio Canova. The originals sculpted from marble in 1792 by Antonio Canova (1757-1822) were made for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St.Peters Basilica, Rome. Good even patination with some rubbed highlights to the manes. Copies of these beautiful sculptures adorn some of the world's greatest houses and institutions, including a fine pair at Chatsworth House, the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire. Mounted on Verde Antico marble bases. Italy, circa 1880.
