CA0633 Bronze Abduction of the Sabine Women after Giambologna
Good quality early 20th century Grand Tour bronze of 'The Abduction of the Sabine Women' after Jean de Boulogne otherwise known as 'Giambologna' (1529-1608). Completed around 1582 the original is a prominent work in the Loggia dei Lanzi in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence. The statue depicts a scene from Roman mythology when Rome kidnapped women from neighbouring states. Three entwined figures, two men and one woman are placed on a naturalistic base which in turn sits on a carved pedestal base with a high relief panel illustrating the abduction of the women.
