CA0628 Fine pair of French Empire Sphinx Chenets
A fine quality large pair of 19th century French Empire patinated and gilt bronze ormolu chenets in the form of winged sphinxes with female heads and lion paw feet in the manner of designs by Francois-Joseph Belanger and Pierre Philippe Thomire. The beautifully cast and chased black patinated winged sphinx sit on gilt bronze ormolu bases with a central frieze depicting a mask of Apollo, cornucopia, floral and scroll details against black patinated bronze back plates. The frieze is believed to depict Louis XIV, the Sun King as Apollo and the ends of stars and sun bursts. Their design is also a tribute to André-Charles Boulle the pioneer of applying gilt bronze ormolu to cabinet making, the tapering spiral feet are inspired by designs by Boulle for the King's commodes. Overall in very good condition. France, circa 1850.
