CA0627 Grand Tour bronze and marble statue of St. Peter
A good complete example of a 19th century Grand Tour patinated bronze and marble cabinet model of the statue of St. Peter after the original by Arnolfo di Cambio’s (1245-1302) in the Vatican Basilica in Rome. The bronze St Peter is depicted sitting on a marble throne, dressed in a philosophical stole, with his left hand holding the keys to heaven close to his chest, and the right raised in the act of blessing. The throne is carved out of white statuary marble, the base inset with three Marmo Levanto panels on a grey Bardiglio marble slab base. This model has retained its halo which is so often missing. Rome, circa 1880.
