CA0637 Decorative Carrara Marble Bust of the muse Erato
Very decorative early 20th Century Italian Neoclassical Carrara marble bust representing a muse, most probably Erato, the goddess of erotic and lyrical poetry. Her name means "lovely" or "beloved" from the Greek word eratos. The central rose floral crown has similarities with the full length Roman marble statue discovered at Hadrians Villa in Tivoli and now on permanent display in the Museo Nacional del Prado. Socle possibly a later addition.
