Napoleonic Hussards Officer's Battle Sabre Sword
A quite fasinating and superb Consulat or early Empire period Light Cavalry Hussard's ‘Sabre a l’Allemande’ officer campaign sword. Classic carved checkered ebony grip. Unmarked early curved, single and false edged blade with a central fuller, blued and gilded top half with a Hussar on horseback and typical empire engraved designs. Langets engraved with a central floral motif. Leather covered wooden scabbard with brass mounts, throat locket etched with a list of Napoleonic battles from 1805 to 1812 in typical Empire period typography. These must be a list of battles the owner of this sword participated in, and it is quite a list, Ulm, Austerlitz, Auerstaedt, Eylau, Friedland, Echmuhl, Ratisbonne, Wagram, Smolensk, La Moskova. Possibly a presentation sword but I believe this is an officer's sword that was used throughout these campaigns and then engraved on this soldier's retirement after the Russian Campaign of 1812. A fascinating sword, a witness to many of the decisive battles of the Napoleonic Wars. Circa 1805.
