Very rare Grand Tour bronze bust of the Dancing Faun by Sommer
Very rare, expressive and dramatic 19th Century Neapolitan Grand Tour patinated bronze of the Dancing Faun, after the antique. This unusual, superbly modelled and cast portrait is a bust version of the famous full length bronze excavated at Pompeii in 1830 in what became known as the House of the Faun and now on permanent display at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. Dark, almost black patination signed to the reverse 'Fonderia Sommer Napoli' for the foundry of Giorgio Sommer (1834-1914) - one of the most highly regarded Neapolitan creaters of Grand Tour bronzes. Italy, Naples, circa 1880.
