CA0666 18th Century pair of bronze busts of Rousseau and Voltaire on marble bases
A pair of late 18th Century busts of the titans of the Enlightenment, the philosophers Rousseau and Voltaire as classical Roman Senators, in patinated bronze on gilt bronze socles set on red marble turned bases. After portraits by the sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon (1744-1828). Signed Sellier to the reverse of both figures. The Sellier family, also known as Seillier, and finally Seillière, were a prominent merchant and banking family that owned founderies in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. Florentin Seilliere (1744-1825) was made a baron by Napoleon, and the title was made hereditary after the Bourbon Restauration. Attractive early pair of bronzes. France, late 18th Century.
