CA0678 Large Official Portrait of Napoleon after David
Superb early 19th Century French Empire period large scale engraving of Napoleon in its original french polished mahogany frame with ebonised corners. After the original painting of Napoleon in his study by Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) this portrait was drawn by his student Benjamin Eugene Bourgeois (1791-1818), and engraved by Noel Francois Bertrand (1784-1852) under the direction of David. Dressed in the uniform of an officer of the Grenadiers decorated with the Legion of Honor and the Order of the Iron Crown this iconic depiction soon became the official portrait of the Emperor throughout the Empire. Circa 1810.
