Grand Tour bronze of Venus with the Apple after Thorvaldsen
Interesting, good quality 19th century Grand Tour patinated bronze of Venus with the Apple after the original marble statue created by Bertel Thorvaldsen between 1813-1816 and now on permanent display in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen. Based on the classical Greek myth of the golden apple thrown by the goddess Strife and the Judgement of Paris who chose Venus as the fairest goddess. The sculpture depicts Venus after the contest, with one hand she collects her clothes on the tree stump whilst with the other she holds the token of beauty up to her admiring gaze. Well modelled and cast with a beautiful even dark brown patination. Probably Italian based on the typically Neapolitan style base. Italy, circa 1860.
