Large alabaster statue of The Abduction of the Sabine Women after Giambologna
Very attractive, large scale, full length 19th Century Grand Tour pure white carved alabaster library group of 'The Abduction of the Sabine Women' after Jean de Boulogne otherwise known as 'Giambologna' (1529-1608). Completed around 1582 the original is a prominent work in the Loggia dei Lanzi in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence. The statue depicts a scene from Roman mythology when Rome kidnapped women from neighbouring states. Three entwined figures, two men and one woman are placed on a naturalistic base which intern sits on a carved pedestal base with a high relief panel illustrating the abduction of the women. A few old repairs (the usual losses to hands) on what is a delicate piece of statuary which doesn't travel well so can only be delivered by us or overland courier. Italy, probably Florence, circa 1880.
