CA0713 Rare Kneeling Bronze of Selene on stepped marble base
Beautiful early 19th Century French Empire period neoclassical patinated bronze of the Greek goddess Selene (Luna in the Roman pantheon) probably based on the 3rd Century Roman copy of a Hellenistic original in the Pio Clementino Museum, in the Vatican City, Rome. Portrayed kneeling on the dome of the moon holding a wreath in one hand with her veil billowing over her head. She was also goddess of the dawn. Fine quality bronze, mounted on a stepped Rouge Royal marble and patinated bronze base. French, circa 1810.
