Grand Tour patinated bronze library bust of Demosthenes
Fine example of a Grand Tour patinated bronze library bust of the ancient Greek orator and statesman Demosthenes of Athens who opposed Macedonian expansion under Philip II and Alexander the Great. Even dark brown patination inscribed 'Démosthènes' to the front, presented on a fossil stone block base. There are a number of copies of busts of Demosthene derived from a Greek bronze original by Polyeuktos (Polyclitus), this version, where Demosthenes appears younger than in others, is most probably based on the marble Roman copy in the Louvre. French, circa 1870.
