Grand Tour bronze bust of Julius Caesar on marble socle
Fine quality, patinated bronze Grand Tour portrait bust of Julius Caesar, probably after the antique original Roman Chiaramonti bust in the Vatican Museums in Rome. The Chiaramonti bust is one of only two academically recognised portrait busts of Julius Caesar. Like this version it shows a strong, grave, idealised leader and was created posthumously on the occasion of his deification in 42BC. It could also be a copy of the bust of Julius Caesar in the Capitoline Museum in Rome which has a similar hairline. Good library size bust with a dark brown patination presented on the original red and black marble socle base in the manner of Benedetto Boschetti (Rome 1820-1870). Italy, probably Rome, circa 1870.
