Grand Tour Borghese Gladiator on Siena marble
Good size and fine quality 19th century Grand Tour patinated bronze of the Borghese Gladiator, after the Hellenistic marble original in the Louvre discovered by Cardinal Scipion Borghese in the early 17th Century. In 1808, the statue left Italy for the Louvre, following the purchase of the collection by Napoleon I from his brother-in-law, Prince Camille Borghese. it is said to be the perfect example of the male nude in motion. Set upon a substantial beautifully figured Siena marble base. France/Italy, circa 1860.
