Grand Tour Dying Gaul in patinated bronze on Siena marble
Unusual, early 19th century Italian patinated cabinet bronze of a highlight of the Grand Tour, The Dying Gaul, on a Siena marble base, after the antique. Sometimes referred to as The Dying Galatian or The Dying Gladiator, the original is now on permanent display in the Capitoline Museum in Rome. Beautiful fine casting with a dark brown patination and unusually cast as seperate pieces and mounted directly onto the marble not as an integral oval base as is nearly always the case. Italy, probably Rome, circa 1820.
