Grand Tour Amore con Delfino in bronze on serpentine
Beautiful 19th century Neapolitan Grand Tour library bronze of the 'Amore con Delfino' fountain. After the antique original discovered in 1862 in the Thermae (baths) in Pompeii and now on permanent display in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. Great example of Pompeian 'archaeological' verdigris finish patination and mounted on a beautiful matching green serpentine marble base. Cupid, the god of love, was often associated with dolphins as an allegory for how swiftly love moves on. Italy, circa 1880.
