Grand Tour Patinated Bronze of the Venus de Milo, Signed A.Messina Roma
Large, late 19th Century Grand Tour verdigris bronze model of one of the most famous greek sculptures, the Venus de Milo. The original, initially attributed to the sculptor Praxiteles, is now thought to be the work of Alexandros of Antioch and dates from around 130BC and is currently on permanent display at in the Louvre in Paris. Good quality bronze signed 'A.Messina Roma' for Antonio Messina, a Rome based foundry that cast both bronzes and silver. The verdigris patina is typical of Roman workshops throughout the late 18th and 19th century. Rome, circa 1870.
