Grand Tour Marble Psyche of Capua

Beautiful 19th Century Grand Tour marble of the Psyche of Capua. The original, excavated in 1726 in the amphitheatre in Capua is now on permanent display in the National Archaelogy Museum in Naples. The figure is thought to represent Psyche, the greek goddess of the soul, and it is believed that the smooth surface to the side of the figure indicates it was once part of a group, possibly with Cupid. Early, slightly weathered example with a lovely patina of age and the faintest hint of a signature to the side. Dated on the underside 1857. Nicely sculpted library size model. Italy, probably Naples.
