Scarce Grand Tour Bronze of Saint Sebastian
Very rare, early 19th Century (or earlier) Italian Grand Tour cabinet patinated bronze of Saint Sebastian. This is a scarce bronze representation of the original marble statue by the baroque sculptor Pier Paolo Campi (1668-1764) in the Sant'Agnese church in the Piazza Navona in Rome. Interestingly it includes a halo above the martyrs head sometimes seen on other versions of the saint. Saint Sebastian is shown tied to a tree stump his body pierced with arrows and his Roman armour piled up behind him. On an architectual plinth base with a central flower motif. Rare Grand Tour item.
