Rare, large and beautiful 19th Century italian Grand Tour Siena marble classical Roman labrum or basin in the manner of Benedetto Boschetti.
A labrum was a water vessel used in ancient Roman baths and gardens. A very similar larger version can be seen in the 'Gabinetto delle Maschere' in the Vatican Museum in Rome. Carved block base with a fluted spreading stem. Stepped square form bowl with a lobed ribbed underside. Stylised central flower and a classical egg and dart style rim. Carved swans on each corner. Good example of a rare Grand Tour item.
