Rare Pair of Grand Tour Giallo Antico Marble Askos Ewers
Extremely rare pair of 19th Century Grand Tour Italian Giallo Antico marble ‘Askos’ ewers, after the antique bronze Roman original excavated at Herculaneum and now in the National Archaeological Museum, Naples. Often seen in bronze these are the only ones I have ever seen in marble and 'a pair'. An Askos was a Roman pouring vessel for wine or milk. Graceful foliate decorated handle terminating with a winged putto standing on a scallop shell, the gadrooned rim is surmounted by two carved goats. Presented on black stained ash bases. Restorations. Italy, probably Rome, circa 1880.
