CA0813 4th Century BC Etruscan Antefix of a Satyr
Wonderful and fascinating 4th Century BC Etruscan terracotta antefix roof tile. An antefix tile is a vertical block which terminates and conceals the roof tiles on Greek and Etruscan buildings in antiquity and was according to mythology invented by the Greek sculptor Butades (or Dibutades) the first ancient greek modeller in clay inspired by his daughter Kora who smitten with love for a youth, drew the outline of his shadow on a wall. This example has the face of a satyr with pointed ears, balding pate and flowing beard and moustache with traces of the original applied pigment. Provenance: previously sold through Christies 2011, Faustus Ancient Art and Jewellery 1992, Private Collection, USA.
