CA0817 Very Unusual Rococo 'Au Bon Sauvage' Lustre Candlesticks
A very unusual pair of 19th Century 'Au Bon Sauvage' French Louis XVI style gilt bronze lustre candlesticks. The beautifully cast and chased bronze figures are very reminiscent of those seen on clocks and candlesticks of the Directiore period depicting an early 19th Century vision of native Americans. Possiblly based on the popular late 18th Century romantic novel set in Mauritius 'Paul et Virginie' by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, published in 1788. Exuberant and large Rococo style candle cups with mixed crystal drops, some of which are later replacements. Round platform with Rococo decorated footed base and gilt bronze socles. Adapted for electricity probably at the end of the 19th Century.
