Rare Pair of Grand Tour Oil Lamp Candelabra
A very rare pair of 19th Century Italian Grand Tour patinated bronze three light candelabra in the form of ancient Roman oil lamps, after antique roman originals found at Pompeii and Herculanium and now housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. In over 30 years of collecting I have seen a number of these lamps but never one adapted to form a candelabra. Typical anthemion design handle and figural finial cover in the form of a classical male running with a flaming torch. Amphora style candle holders. Single socle foot on a circular marble Marmo Rosso base. Italian, circa 1870.
