Rare and Important Pair of Grand Tour Alabaster Statues
Stunning and rare pairing of two classical sculptures of the Grand Tour to illustrate a popular theme of the 19th Century, love gained and love lost. Carved in alabaster the first is of Cupid and Psyche after the Roman example in the Capitoline Museum in Rome, the other Byblis and Caunus after the version by Francesco Carradori (1747-1824) in the Galleria Palatina in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence which is itself very similar to an earlier sculpture by Laurent Delveaux (1696 -1778) but with less drapery. Second half of the 19th century. Delicately carved pair of sculptures of good size for an educated gentleman's library. Italy, circa 1860.
