Rare French Empire Alexander the Great Mantel Clock in Rose Gold
A fine and impressive early 19th century French Empire Alexander the Great patinated and rare rose gold gilt bronze mantel clock. Surmounted by a superbly modelled figure of the young Alexander. This clock illustrates the advice of Aristotle, Alexander's teacher, who suggested whilst studying that he hold a rock in his hand so if he falls asleep the rock will fall into the bowl and wake him up, so he can continue his studies. Beautifully cast and chased bronze mounts with a central cartouche showing Alexander with Aristotle overseen by his mother and father, King Philip II of Macedonia. A rare rose gold finish probably commisioned by a wealthy patron. Eight day silk suspension movement. France, circa 1810.
