Grand Tour Neopolitan Signed Bust of Dionysus
Superb quality 19th century Grand Tour patinated bronze bust of the mythological god Dionysus, the Philosopher Plato, or as some archaeologists have suggested, even Zeus himself. The identity of this bust remains unclear to this day. Beautifully cast and chased. The original, now housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, was discovered by the Swiss archaeologist Karl Weber around 1750 during his excavations in the Villa dei Papiri, near Herculaneum. Signed G. Pollice Napoli for the bronze workshop of Giuseppe Pollice. Italian circa 1870.
