CA0956 French 19thC. verdigris and patinated bronze Empire clock.
Super quality, romantic, mid 19th Century verdigris and patinated bronze version of an Empire clock depicting the history of the Greek sculptor Butades (or Dibutades) the first ancient greek modeller in clay. Based on the 1785 work 'The Origin of Painting' by Jean Baptiste Regnault the clock illustrates the story of Kora, the daughter of Butades, who smitten with love for a youth, drew the outline of his shadow on a wall. Her father modelled the image in clay which then inspired him to ornament the ends of antefix roof tiles with faces. Large and heavy clock surmounted by two patinated bronze figures of the beautiful youthful boy and Kora drawing around his shadow. Brocot eight day movement stamped Japy Frères & Cie. French circa 1867.
