Retour d"Egypte Box Clock by Pons
Classic early 19th century late French Empire 'Retour d'Egypte' gilt bronze ormolu mounted mahogany box clock by Honore Pons. Stepped mahogany veneered case with inset two tone gilt bronze sphinxes, set on simple ball feet. Fine quality ormolu griffin mount to the front and two tone gilt bronze torcheres to the sides. Back door with original handle and hinges. Good quality eight day two train silk suspension movement stamped 'Pons Medialle D'Ore 1827'. Silvered dial. Honore Pons formed the Guild of 'Fabrique d'Horologerie de Saint-Nicolas-d'Ailermont' and is credited with being central to the improvement of French clock movements after being bought in by Napoleon in 1806. Made a Chevalier of the 'Legion d'Honneur' he retired in 1847. France circa 1827.
