Fascinating early 19th Century portrait of a French Naval 'Capitaine de Vaisseau', Captain of a Ship of the Line from the early Empire period. Painted in resplendant uniform wearing four medals including a Legion d'Honneur and large golden epaulettes embellished with french naval insignia. Battle of Trafalgar period. Slight similarities to Jean Jacques Etienne Lucas Captain of the Redoubtable. Oil on canvas. French, circa 1805.
