CA0985 Fine French Empire ‘Sacrifice à l’Amour’ clock
Fine and rare French Empire gilt bronze ormolu mantel clock, depicting the ‘Sacrifice à l’Amour’. 8 day silk suspension movement with enamel dial signed ‘A Paris'. The movement housed in a tasseled and fringed hanging decorated with forget-me-nots on a platform base consisting of four tapered columns decorated with flaming hearts. The clock is surmounted by a classically attired female sitting on an Empire style stool pouring libations over an altar dedicated to love. By her side is a wine cup, ewer and a dog to representf fidelty. An identical clock can be seen in the French National Collection and is listed in the inventory of clocks at the Chateau de Saint Cloud in 1807 see 'Pendules du Mobilier National' by Marie-France Dupuy-Baylet pp 48. France, circa 1810.
