Rare Pair of Plaques of Napoleon and Alexander I of Russia by Galle
Superb and rarely seen pair of early 19th century gilt bronze or copper plaques representing the Emperor Napoleon and Alexander I, Emperor of Russia, by Claude Galle. The Napoleon plaque inscribed 'NAPOLEON EMPEREUR DES FRANCAIS ET ROI D'ITALIE' and the Alexander plaque 'ALEXANDER.I.IMP.RUSSORUM'. Both plaques signed 'GALLE FECIT' and remarkably both retaining their original paper labels to the reverse. Probably issued to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807. Identical frames and loops for hanging.
