CA1026 'The Triumph of Galatea' Empire Mantel Clock
A fine and rare early 19th Century French Empire/Restauration period ormolu gilt bronze clock surmounted by Galatea riding a dolphin clearly inspired by the 17th century French Baroque artist Jacques Stella's (1596-1657) painting 'The Triumph of Galatea'. In this interpretation Galatea is clothed in typical early 19th century French Empire fashion. The eight day silk suspension movement is contained within the body of the dolphin. The base mounted with symbols of the god Neptune and the sea. Breguet style moon hands. Circa 1820.
