Grand Tour Alabaster Statue of Dante
Magnificent and rare large late 19th century Grand Tour carved Alabastro Fiorito library statue of a seated, pensive, Dante Alighieri on a red marble base. Signed to the side 'Prof. A Petrellli, Firenze' for Aristide Petrellli 1868-1930. Petrellli worked in Florence where he specialised in romanticised classical and historic figures. This figure would seem to be a combination of the seated figure of Dante's tomb with the statue outside the Ufizzi Gallery. Florence, Italy, circa 1900.
