Grand Tour Terracotta Models of Spinario and the Sleeping Faun from the Chiurazzi Foundry
Two exceptionally provenanced late 19th/early 20th Century terracotta Grand Tour models of Spinario and the Sleeping Faun from the Chiurazzi Foundry in Naples. One stamped Chiurazzi. Possibly working models for bronzes, they were purchased in 1900 by Reginald Fothergill whilst on his Grand Tour. His original diary from the trip will be included in the sale. Reginal was brother to John Fothergill the author of ‘An Innkeepers Diary’ and the artist George Fothergill. The Fothergills resided at Allen Bank, Grasmere in the heart of the Lake District. Allen Bank is best known for being the home of William Wordsworth (from 1808 to 1811), but it was also occupied at various times by Dorothy Wordsworth, Thomas De Quincey, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Matthew Arnold. It is now owned by the National Trust and is open to the public. Spinario, also called the Boy with Thorn or Fedele can be seen in the Capitoline Museum, Rome, the Sleeping Faun or the Sleeping Satyr, excavated from the Villa of the Papyri, Herculaneum in 1752 can now be seen at the National Archaeological Museum, Naples.
