CA1115 Large French Restauration Marly Venus Clock
A large early 19th century Restauration period French marble mantel clock surmounted by a beautiful patinated bronze sculpture of the Marly Venus. White marble and ormolu mounted case. 8 day movement. The bronze is a variant of the Hellenistic Crouching Venus on a tortoise and was originally commissioned by Louis XIV from Antoine Coysevox and delivered in 1686 to the Château de Marly. Today the Marly marble Venus is in the Louvre in Paris and the Marly bronze copy is at Versailles.
