CA1129 Late Empire Clock by Lesieur

Early 19th Century French bronze and sienna marble mantel clock by Lesieur. Imposing marble clock surmounted by a statue of the Mattei Ceres in bronze, after the antique original Roman marble statue in the Museo Pio-Clementino, Vatican. Movement signed Lesieur Paris. There are few records concerning Lesieur’s life and career, it is likely that he was the clockmaker François-Eugène Lesieur. Tardy notes that by 1806 Lesieur was established at Vieille rue du Temple; during 1812-20 and 1830-50 he was at Rue de la Verrerie and in 1840 at Boulevard St. Martin. Elsewhere he is recorded at Bar-du-Bec in 1839 and in 1840 at Rue des Alexiens. Circa 1830.
