Important Grand Tour marble Sarcophagus

Important, large, early to mid 19th century Italian Grand Tour Giallo Antico sarcophagus after the Egyptian sarcophagus discovered in the Baths of Agrippa on the Campo Marzio in Rome and illustrated by Piranesi in 1756. Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa victor at the Battle of Actium in 31BC was a Roman General, Statesman and Architect creating buildings such as the original Pantheon. He renovated aquaducts, built bath houses and porticos. He is credited with the Emperor Augustus with making Rome a 'city of marble. Very fine example, stunning workmanship and beautifully figured marble. Italy, Rome circa 1840.
